Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy are the two betting favorites for this week's Farmers Insurance Open, but it's the former who has the edge.

Rahm won this tournament in 2017 and is the No. 2-ranked player in the world. He withdrew from last week's American Express after tweaking a muscle, but said the WD was mostly precautionary and he expected to be fine for Torrey Pines.

McIlroy was in the Middle East last week, finishing third at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. McIlroy led through 54 holes but couldn't close for his first title since 2019.

Golf fans and sports bettors rejoice! The PGA Tour returns Thursday, June 11, with the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. The first tournament since the cancelation of The Players Championship in mid-March will feature a star-studded field including each of the top five golfers in the Official World Golf Ranking.

DraftKings Sportsbook and FanDuel Sportsbook have already posted odds for the outright tournament winner. The loaded field sees prices greatly suppressed at the top but tremendous value exists for many prominent names going overlooked.

Charles Schwab Challenge: Opening outright odds and field breakdown

World No. 1 Rory McIlroy is the heavy tournament favorite on both sites. He’s +800 at DraftKings and +800 at FanDuel. Defending champion and 30th-ranked golfer Kevin Na is a lofty +5000 at DraftKings and +5500 at FanDuel.

Three golfers on both sites are priced below 20/1. Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas, respectively, follow McIlroy, while the sportsbooks differ on Webb Simpson and Bryson DeChambeau in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots.

Former World No. 1 Brooks Koepka sees his inflated odds persist following a horrid start to the 2020-21 season which saw him miss the cut in two of seven events with one withdrawal due to injury. He is +2500 at FanDuel and +2200 at DraftKings. Major champions such as Justin Rose, Gary Woodland, Shane Lowry, Louis Oosthuizen, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day and Bubba Watson all carry odds longer than +4000. Phil Mickelson is among the biggest long shots at +10000 at FanDuel and +12500 at DraftKings following his participation in The Match II on Sunday, May 24.

Henrik Stenson, Adam Scott and Tyrrell Hatton are the only golfers with a win on the 2020-21 PGA Tour season not in attendance. Two-time winner this season, Brendon Todd, is +15000 at both books. Cameron Smith, Sebastian Munoz, Lanto Griffin, Cameron Champ and Nick Taylor are among the others with wins this season priced above +10000.

Charles Schwab Challenge: What it means for sports betting

The Charles Schwab Challenge marks the next step in the return of sports betting amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The UFC and NASCAR have been running events without fans the last several weeks, while PGA Tour bettors were able to get some action on The Match and the TaylorMade Driving Relief skins event in May.

The unprecedented lull in the sporting and betting worlds, coupled with the ultra-competitive field at Colonial Country Club is sure to bring increased action to the sportsbooks. William Hill Sportsbook compared betting action on The Match to a regular-season NFL game. DraftKings and FanDuel reported five-figure wagers on both the Tiger Woods/Peyton Manning and Phil Mickelson/Tom Brady sides.

The anticipation and quality of the fields at these first few PGA Tour events could see betting action similar to majors. The results are also sure to drastically affect the futures odds for the PGA Championship, US Open and Masters later this year. Those markets have remained opened since mid-March, but with no golf being played there have been few, if any, changes to the odds.
